Summary:

Johal recruited Kandola, a Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) officer, and Riar to assist Johal in a scheme to import cocaine and firearms into Canada.

The British Columbia Supreme Court, in a decision reported at [2012] B.C.T.C. Uned. 968, convicted Johal of conspiracy to import cocaine (count 1), importation of cocaine (count 2), importation of firearms (count 3) and bribery of a CBSA officer with intent to facilitate an offence (count 7).

The British Columbia Supreme Court, in a decision reported at [2012] B.C.T.C. Uned. 1042, sentenced Johal to 16 years' imprisonment for count 1; 16 years' imprisonment for count 2, concurrent to the sentence for count 1; two years' imprisonment for count 3, consecutive to the sentence for count 1; and one year's imprisonment for count 7, concurrent to the sentence for count 3. Johal appealed from the sentence.

The British Columbia Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal.
