SENTENCING
According to the federal Criminal Code, sentences are imposed upon those convicted of criminal
infractions with the intention of expressing society’s denunciation of the crime, deterring the
transgressor from further similar activity, promoting in the offenders a sense of responsibility
for their malfeasance, and assisting in the offender’s rehabilitation. There is a signif‌icant body
of law, entirely federal and predominantly statutory, which directs judges in the formulation
