To Teachers
Activities in this edition of School's In are designed for students from grades nine to twelve and can be used in conjunction with lessons in career and life management, legal studies, mathematics or social studies. The activities are designed to assist students in research and presentation skills, the understanding of insurance law, and in becoming familiar with both legal and insurance-related terminology. Activities include:
The Insurance Challenge Game
Using fictional character scenarios, students research insurance costs for that character's insurance challenge. Points are given for finding and presenting accurate and low rates, presenting sources of information, and adding to a group wall that highlights insurance-related responsibilities.
Presentation of Insurance Law
Students research and react to one Canadian law that regulates insurance.
Insurance Challenge
Students become involved in an Insurance Challenge game.
To Students
Activity One: The Insurance Challenge Game
Goal
The goal is to be the individual or group who can most economically solve the insurance challenges of ten fictional characters, can create a new character with a challenge and solution, and can post an insightful message regarding insurance and responsibility. Assume all premiums will be for one year, and unless otherwise indicated, assume that the insurance is issued in your home province.
Procedure
You are able to earn points in three ways:
(75 points) Individually or in groups, you will read about the insurance challenges of the ten characters described below. You will then research insurance costs for each character, fill in the chart, document your source, and present findings to your class. A good source of information is www.ibc.ca
(10 points) Fill in the missing row of the chart by creating an eleventh character with an insurance challenge and the cost of the challenge.
(15 points) Post on the class wall one method that a citizen could take to responsibly lower an insurance premium (e.g. enrol in driver education).
