Timmins-conceived safety glove available in stores: Mine Safety Solutions now working on redesigned coverall.

A year after hard rock miner Anthony Gilin launched his patented safety gloves for use in the mining industry, the gloves are available at a string of retail outlets, and the inventor is mulling over his next design.

Offered through his company, Mine Safety Solutions, the neon-orange gloves, which were conceived after a falling metal rod fractured Gilin's finger underground, are designed to limit impact, resist punctures, and reduce vibration, all while maintaining dexterity and high visibility.

Retailing for between $50 and $60 a pair, they're now available in a handful of Timmins shops, including Home Hardware Building Centre, Sling Choker, Soucie Salo Safety, and the Hilltop Corner Store.

They are additionally available online, through the Handy Hydrant website, and through Amazon.ca. Gilin is currently in negotiations with various distributors to extend his network.

"We're actually selling them in Canadian Tire in Ottawa," Gilin said. "I'm just waiting for the PO (purchase order) numbers, but he agreed for just a small batch of 24 pairs."

To get to this point, Gilin's gloves underwent an extensive design and testing process, including exposure to real-world use by workers at a number of industry players, such as Kirkland Lake Gold and The Bucket Shop.

Some of the miners found the glove was too stiff and took too long to mould to the hands, so Gilin used that feedback to modify the design.
