YOUNG OFFENDERS
The primary purpose of having a separate criminal law for persons under a certain age is to
protect them from entry into the adult criminal justice system in the belief that there is a far
greater likelihood of eventual rehabilitation should they remain outside that system. This is
an area of federal jurisdiction (as is the criminal law generally) and is governed largely by the
Youth Criminal Justice Act (which was formerly the Young Offenders Act and, even earlier, the
Juvenile Delinquents Act). Provisions of the federal Criminal Code and Canada Evidence Act are
also at play in this area of law. Related topics: CHILDREN AND THE LAW, CRIMINAL LAW,
CRIMINAL PROCEDURE, EVIDENCE (CRIMINAL).
JEUNES CONTREVENANTS
Cette expression vise spécif‌iquement le sous-ensemble du droit pénal et du droit CRIMINEL
qui s’applique à la JEUNESSE.
