ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Nicholas Bala ha s been a Professor at the Faculty of L aw at Queen’s
University si nce 1980. Most of his teaching and rese arch ha s been in
the area of family and children’s law, with research focusing on issues
related to young offenders, child witnesses and ch ild abuse, spousal
abuse, and parental right s and responsibilities after divorce. Much of
his research work is interdisciplin ary and he ha s undertaken collab-
orative projects with criminologists, psychologists, social workers, and
health professionals. Professor Bala has published ex tensively and this
is the f‌i fteenth book th at he has w ritten or co-authored. His work has
been cited by all levels of court in Canada, including most of the re-
cent Supreme Court of Canada decisions dealing with youth justice is-
sues. He frequently presents at professional education programs acros s
Canada for judges, lawyers, probation off‌icers, youth workers, teachers,
doctors, psychologists, child welfare workers, and soci al workers.
Sanjeev Anand, a Professor at the Faculty of L aw at the University of
Alberta, is a former prosecutor and defence counsel. He teaches and re-
searches in f‌ive f‌ields: substantive criminal law, crimin al procedure, sen-
tencing, evidence, and constitutional law. An area of particular interest
to Dr. Anand is youth justice. Indeed, he has authored or co-authored
more than a dozen book chapters, journal ar ticles, and comm issioned
reports on various aspect s of Canad a’s juvenile justice system. Profes-
sor Anand’s work has been cited by courts across the nation, including
the Supreme Court of Canada. He has done considerable consulting on
law reform i ssues in the crim inal law f‌ield for the federal govern ment
and he is a frequent media commentator on criminal and constitutional
law issues. He is the co-author (with Eric Colvin) of Principles of Crimi-
nal Law, 3d ed. (2007), a treatise that critically e xplores the general
principles underlying the law of cr iminal culpability in Canada.
