About the Editors and Authors
Nicole LaViolette
Nicole LaViolette is Associate Professor of Law at the University of
Ottawa where she teaches public international law, international hu-
manitarian law, conf‌licts of laws, and family law. Her research is devoted
mainly to international human rights, international humanitarian law,
and the rights of refugees. She has authored several articles and studies
relating to refugee law, war crimes, international human rights, and the
rights of sexual minorities. She has several years of experience working
as a legislative assistant in the House of C ommons of Canada and she
has worked extensively with both governmental and non-governmental
organizations specializing in human rights. She is a graduate of the Uni-
versity of Ottawa’s Faculty of Law and Carleton University. She was a
law clerk at the Federal Court of Appeal of Canada before completing a
graduate degree at Cambridge University in 1998.
Craig Forcese
Craig Forcese joined the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa in
2003. He teaches public international law, national security law, admin-
istrative law, and public law/legislation. Much of his present research
and writing relates to national security, human rights, and democratic
