ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I owe my wife a great debt of thanks for her valuable advice, support,
and encouragement while I was writing this book. She spent count-
less hours reading my manuscript at dierent stages and providing
tremendously helpful feedback. I would like to express my gratitude
also to all those who contributed ideas or reviewed some chapters of
the book. In particular, I am grateful to Hasmik Egian, Director of the
Security Council Aairs Division of the UN Secretariat; Brian Gorlick,
former UN and UNHCR ocial and lecturer at University of London;
François Olivier Bouchard, Associate Legal Advisor of NATO Support
and Procurement Agency; Rafael Ruschel, Associate in DeBrauw
Blackstone Westbroek; and Marjorie Langlois, Associate and National
Representative in Unifor. I also would like to thank those who made
this book possible by exposing me to UN law, politics, and practice.
More specically, I am grateful to my friends and former supervisors,
Brian Gorlick and Elizabeth Brown, from whom I learned a great deal
about the United Nations system. I am equally grateful to my for-
mer colleagues in the internal justice system of the UN and in the
UNHCR.
