Affordable housing developments across the North get funding.

Affordable housing developments across the North have received more than $10.3 million in funding through the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).

The announcement was held at the Timmins Native Friendship Centre, which received more than $3 million in combined federal and provincial funding through the Investment in Affordable Housing agreement. The centre is developing 18 affordable housing units for local Indigenous residents.

"The Timmins Native Friendship Centre strives to improve the quality of life for Indigenous people living in an urban environment," said Gary Martin, president of the Timmins Native Friendship Centre, in a release.

"We are on our way to providing 18 two-bedroom units, with two accessible units. We are excited to provide 18 families with a sense of security to avoid homelessness and provide onsite services as needed."

The Timmins project was announced last fall. Barry H. Martin Architectural and Engineering Consulting is the firm tasked with developing the project.

The announcement celebrated nine additional affordable housing developments throughout northeastern Ontario, supported by more than $10.3 million in federal and provincial contributions from the governments of Canada and Ontario. These developments provide an additional 86 units of affordable housing in the region.

The following developments were also celebrated:

* sixteen units of affordable housing for Indigenous residents at 181 Greenfield Drive in Sault Ste. Marie, which received $2.7 million;
