Around the Legal Resource Centre.

This spring, the Legal Resource Centre accomplished much more than just a physical move from the University of Alberta campus to new offices in West Edmonton. The Centre has evolved from the former Legal Studies Program into a non-profit and proudly independent entity while still maintaining important and valuable ties with the Faculty of Extension at the University. The Centre is enjoying expanded space and expects that next year will bring expanded programming for individuals and communities seeking information about legal and justice issues.

To celebrate this event, the Board of Directors, the Friends of the Legal Resource Centre, and staff held an Open House on June 19, 2007. The event, held in the Centre's new offices, was hosted by the Chair of the Friends, the Honourable Anne McLennan, P.C. One of the highlights of the day was the ceremonial handing over of one "loonie" by Executive Director, Professor Lois Gander to the University, representing the transfer of the ownership of the Legal Studies Program from the University to the Legal Resource Centre.

The Open House was a wonderful afternoon of camaraderie, conversation, and just a few well-timed speeches!

Earlier this summer, we were delighted to learn that the *Laws for Landlords and Tenants in Alberta* website was to be recognized as a recipient of the Alberta Consumer Champion Awards. Developed with funding from the Alberta Real Estate Foundation, it is the only website of its kind in Canada. It features more than 1,000 pages of user-friendly information about renting a home in Alberta. The site received 126,000 visitors in 2006 alone.
