The health field in general is experiencing tremendous growth. The repercussions in many related areas have been felt for some time. This includes the discipline of health law and policy in Canada. There is currently a lack of researchers in this area, with too few being asked to participate in a never-ending stream of requests for assistance in keeping up with the latest developments and trends.

In an attempt to fill this gap, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) have established funding for a health law and policy training program. The Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta is one of three law schools participating in this program (the other two being Dalhousie University and the University of Toronto). The program provides graduate scholarships (currently in the amount of $17,000) to selected LL.M. students at the University of Alberta who are pursuing graduate research and writing in this area. It also provides support for an innovative interdisciplinary program that facilitates interactions between students and faculty in a number of different disciplines in the three different institutions.
