Moving to Nipigon in February 2002, Shannon Cormier, 33, owner of Focus; Life Coaching and Consultative Services, could not find a job in her field of social work or recreation.

With the help of self-employment benefits from Human Resources Development Canada she developed a business plan and became an independent counsellor and program developer. In the last six months Focus has grown an estimated 50 per cent, she says.

Cormier counsels for grief or critical incident stress debriefing, an area which she has specialized in, and works as a program developer. Both aspects of her business have taken flight with three new contracts from northwestern organizations.
