Dedication
On Sunday, August 24, 2004, my aunt passed away. She died of cancer. It
was not her first battle with this disease. Years earlier, my aunt fought and
won against breast cancer. This time, it was different.
It is at times like these that you think about the “bigger picture.” My
eldest brother, Mark, and I spoke about our own lives and loss. You see-my
father died of cancer at the age of 37. At age 32, my mother Beverley, was
widowed and left to raise three boys aged 7, 9 and 13 by herself. Mark and
I spoke about cancer on that Tuesday and how it changed all of our lives
forever. We thought about how different life would have been had our
father lived. But, this was not to be.
My mother, brothers (Mark and Richard) and I carried on after dad
passed away. And over the years, we have all tried to make the most of our
lives. We know how precious life is and what is truly important.

During the completion of this project, my thoughts were frequently with
family members who have been touched by cancer. I dedicate this book to
my father Eugene, brother Ed, and sister-in-law Julie, who are all currently
undergoing treatment for cancer, and whose determination continue to
inspire me, and to my mother Jeanette and sister Janet, who always lend
their generous loving support. I also dedicate my efforts to the loving mem-
ory of my four wonderful grandparents, Paul and Elizabeth Horvath,
George and Martha Szabo, two of whom also lived with cancer.

That is why we are so proud of the contributors to this project. Without hes-
itation every writer agreed immediately that the contributors’ portion of the
royalties would go to the Canadian Cancer Society. Everyone knows the
consequences of cancer. You may die from it; you may survive it; but there
