National Engineering Week Ontario takes place from February 23 to March 2.

PositionIN BRIEF

This year's theme is 'Engineering on the leading edge' and explores how work done by the province's engineers and engineering technicians and technologists contributes to daily life.

Throughout Ontario, the various chapters of Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) will stage events to raise awareness of the profession and encourage young people to choose a career in engineering.

Among the highlights across Ontario is a series of K'NEX Family Construction Workshops at venues including at Science North in Sudbury on Feb. 23-24 and Mar. 1-2.

Engineering volunteers will assist kids over the age of six to create structures using the popular, colour-coded building toy. Other events include a bridge-building challenge. For details go to www.sciencenorth.ca

One of the most active chapters is the Lakehead chapter of the PEO. Volunteers are inviting six to eighth graders from Thunder Bay area schools to participate in two engineering design and build competitions, and tour Lakehead University's engineering labs.

The activities are sponsored by the National Engineering Week Ontario Steering Committee and run in partnership with Lakehead U's Faculty of Engineering.

The Feb. 29 competitions at the Centennial Building are run by Lakehead's Student Chapters of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering and the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering. For details contact Dr. Meilan Liu at 807-343-8952
