Bernard
Cohn
was
born
in
Windsor, Ontario,
on
January 8,1908,
and
died there
on
February 1,1982.
He
lived
his
entire
life
in
Windsor.
He was a
brilliant
crim-
inal lawyer whose remarkable legal career spanned
fifty-two
years.
As a
young
man he
decided
to
pursue
a
career
as a
criminal lawyer,
and he was
called
to
the bar in
1930.
He
quickly established
a law
practice devoted exclusively
to
criminal defence work.
Throughout
his
life,
Cohn
had
great compassion
for the
underdog,
and
he was
fearless
in
opposing
injustice
and
standing
up
against
any
abuses
of
power
by
those
in
authority.
He
successfully
defended clients accused
of
every
type
of
criminal charge, ranging
from
minor
traffic
violations
to
murder.
His
immense talent
as a
criminal lawyer resulted
in
many acquittals
in
murder
trials
and
other serious crimes.
But no
matter
how
minor
or how
serious
a
charge,
Cohn
was
always totally committed
to
vigorously advocating
his
client's
cause.
Bernard
Cohn
was an
affable
and a
gregarious person,
and he was
affec-
tionately called "Barney"
by
everyone
who
knew him.
He was a
colourful,
humorous,
and
quick-witted character
who
enjoyed
fine
cigars
and
especial-
ly
loved
to
wager
on the
outcome
of
sporting events.
On any
given day,
he
could
be
observed sporting
a
natty grey fedora
and a
custom-tailored navy
blue suit,
puffing
on an
ever-present cigar
as he
walked
at a
leisurely pace
to
