FOREWORD
To the First Edition
In recent years the tr ust has come alive. Traditionally as sociated with
the making of wills, it is used tod ay in an increasi ng variety of circum-
stances, from fami ly trusts to employees’ pension tr usts and their health
and welfare trusts. It is found in the char ity and not-for-prof‌it world, in
business and commerce, and in environmental protection.
Many people are involved as tr ustees a nd benef‌iciaries who were
previously unfamil iar with the trust, and lawyers who are not experts
in the area need to be able to assist them. Yet many, including lawyers,
f‌ind the trust a complicated concept. The availabi lity of a clearly writ-
ten, concise, and well-organized book on trust law has therefore long
been needed.
To f‌ill the gap, Eileen Gillese has written this book. It is the sort of
thing you can read w ith your feet up, as well as in the off‌ice or library,
and Professor Gillese ha s set out to make the trust someth ing we want
to read about. Her frequent examples are si mple and familiar in d aily
life. She goes the extra d istance with a point to make sure we under-
stand. It is a pleasure to commend th is book to lawyer, student, and
layperson alike.
