Allograft:
a
transplant between members
of the
same species.
Amniocentesis:
a
form
of
prenatal diagnosis where
a
needle
is
inserted into
the
amniotic
sac to
remove
a
small
amount
of
amniotic
fluid
for
screening
for
genetic
and
other
fetal
anomalies.
Artificial
insemination
(AI):
the
injection
of
collected sperm
from
a
partner
or
donor into
a
woman's uterus
to
fertilize
an
ovum (egg).
Assisted
reproduction:
where reproduction
is
achieved other than through
regular
sexual intercourse;
usually
refers
to AI,
IVF,
or one of its
variants
and
relies
on
donor
gametes
or
embryos.
Autograft:
a
transplant (usually
of
skin
or
bone)
from
one
location
in an
indi-
vidual
to
another location.
Autosome:
a
chromosome other than
a sex
chromosome.
We
have
forty-four
autosomes
(or
twenty-two pairs).
Azoospermia:
absence
of
living
sperm
in the
semen.
Bank:
a
place where
a
supply
of
human tissues
and
other human materials
such
as
blood, sperm,
and
skin
are
kept
for
future
use.
