The community of Kugluktuk [Nunavut] will benefit from the establishment of a new correctional healing facility that will serve low risk offenders from the area. Justice Minister and Premier Paul Okalik made the announcement to community representatives, council and correctional system workers.

The facility will eventually have the capacity to house up to 20 offenders serving a short sentence or returning to complete their sentence from the Baffin Correctional Centre or the Yellowknife Correctional Centre.

The healing facility will allow offenders to serve their time closer to home, address underlying causes of anti-social behaviour and will create up to 12 new employment positions, which will be developed and hired from within the community.
