While the global economic crisis has gripped many communities and put them in the throes of an economic downturn, the Town of Marathon has remained committed and steadfast with its economic development program and continues to pursue initiatives to diversify its economy and stabilize business through sustainability practices. Over the course of the past six months the town has seen three new businesses open and within the last month has seen a new value-added forestry business relocate from Toronto to their industrial park.

"I wouldn't say my phone has been ringing off the hook since the economic downturn has hit, but I've been busy", said Daryl Skworchinski, Community Services and Economic Development Manager. "We've helped a couple businesses relocate within the last couple months and expect a new one to open by the spring as they are currently under construction."

While Marathon has an aggressive business attraction program for a small community, they also have a local Corporate Visitation Program that is in place to support local businesses. "We have a standing offer here in town where the mayor and I will visit any business that requests a meeting to discuss issues or ideas," Skworchinski said.
