A Montreal club featuring female dancers set up loudspeakers on the street broadcasting music and commentary. It was convicted under a city bylaw concerning noise but the Quebec Court of Appeal set aside the conviction, ruling that the bylaw infringed freedom of expression under the Charter of Rights. The Supreme Court of Canada, however, held that the bylaw was valid. While it agreed that the bylaw did infringe the right to freedom of expression, it concluded that the bylaw was a reasonable limit justified by s. 1 of the Charter.
