PREFACE

On behalf of the entire ed itorial board, the Editors-in-C hief would like to than k you
for picking up this volume of Appeal: Re view of Current Law and Law R eform! is year
we received submissions from law students a cross the country and abroad . It was an
exceptionally di cult task to decide the nal papers that wou ld make up the journal.
at being said, we are proud to present si x outstanding submi ssions focusing on a wide
array of issues faci ng the legal communit y. is volume of Appeal features a comment
on the upcoming Cambie Surge ry Centre challenge to the constit utionality of the Britis h
Columbia Medicare Protection Act. Also featu red are articles on contemporar y issues
facing Indigenous com munities in Canada. A ppeal this year ex plores the lessons the
Nisga’a Final Agreement can oer to the dierent models of Aborigina l self-government,
as well as reconcil ing Indigenous legal orders w ith Crown legal orders throug h the
appointment of Aboriginal just ices to the Supreme Court of Ca nada.
Volume 22 also presents a paper tackli ng the issue of racial di scrimination in law
enforcement, arguing t hat Charter provisions allowing damage s for rights infringement
can be used to addre ss these violations. We also present papers d iscussing issues in t he
working world: one addressing modern t rends in the interpretation of the Charter
in labour law c ases, and another di scussing the impact of tech nology on the legal
servicesindus try.
Appeal would not be possible without our strong net work of faculty and volunteers. We
would like to extend our grat itude to our external reviewers who gr aciously donated their
time and expert ise despite their busy schedules. I n particular, we would like to e xtend
our thank s to Professor Ted McDorman and Dr. Kathy Chan for their support a nd
guidanc e throughout the proce ss.
A sincere thank you is a lso in order for our volunteer student reviewers, who have once
again been in strumental in ensu ring the ensuring the qua lity of our publication and
the rigorousness of our blindi ng process. And of course, t he Editors-in-Chief would
like to than k the members of the Appeal Editoria l Board for their tireless e orts and
contributions to ensuring the journ al continues its tradition of excellence.
