PREFACE

Appeal: Review of Current Law and Law Reform is a st udent-led journal that publishes
exclusively student work. is yea r, we continue to feature a vast array of fas cinating
topics from students across Can ada. We introduce authors from the University of
Victoria, University of British Columbia, University of C algary, Dalhousie University,
Queen’s University, University of Toronto, and McGill University.
We begin with topics especial ly important to the west coast community, beginn ing with
an Aborigina l law paper that distils t he topic of restorative justice practices for Aborigin al
oenders. We feature environmental papers t hat address unique issues , including the
protection of Canada’s glaciers from climate c hange and the harnessi ng of tidal energy for
a sustainable fut ure. Our Charter articles involve the rig ht against unlawfu l searches and
seizures of computers, freedom of thoug ht and expression in the context of combatti ng
home-grown terrorism, Parliament’s possible use of the notwit hstanding claus e to
override the newly recogni zed right to strike, and t he approach to administrat ive law
decisions that invoke these Charter rights. Finally, we present an eth ics article on the
dilemmas law yers face in bala ncing their need to mainta in civility in the cou rtroom
while remainin g a zealous advocate.
