PREFACE
This
book
is a first of its
kind
in
Canada.
In all of
Canadian literature, there
are
only three
other books devoted
to the
topic
of
private investigations.
The first
book
is
entitled
If
It
Wasn't
for
Sex I'd
Have
to Get a
Real
Job
Confessions
of a
Private
Investigator1
a war
story
paperback that
is
entertaining reading
but of
little professional value.
The
second book,
The
Canadian
Private
Investigator's
Manual,2
a
guidebook written
by two
environmental
investigators
who
discuss various investigative insights
and
techniques
for
those seeking
to
enter
the
industry.
The
third book
is
The
Fraud
Examiners
Manual, Canadian Edition?
a
com-
prehensive text
for
those seeking certification
as
certified
fraud
examiners. Actually, there
was
a
fourth
book:
the
precursor
to
this one,
a law
school thesis
I
prepared entitled
Legal
Liability
of the
Canadian Private
Investigator.4
Obviously,
I
wrote this book
to fill a
market
and
academic void. There
is a
general con-
sensus, especially
in the
corporate realm, that
the
growth
of the
private sector investigation
industry
in
Canada
is
strong.5 Some
say it is
"booming."6
There
are
four
primary reasons
for
this expansion.

million.
