Great Lakes Power Ltd., which supplies electricity to Sault Ste. Marie and much of Algoma, recorded a net income of $116 million in 2000, a $3-million profit increase over the year before.

Power generation for 2000 jumped 27 per cent to 4,581 gigawatt (GWh) hours from 3,604 GWh in 1999, the company reports. That increase is largely due to the acquisition of the Maclaren Energy hydroelectric system in western Quebec in late 1999.
