La première masse du Manitoba a été sculptée dans le moyeu d'une roue de charrette de la rivière Rouge par un soldat de l'expédition Wolseley (chargée de mater la rébellion menée par Louis Riel en 1869). Cette masse a servi pendant 13 ans, du 15 mars 1871 au 12 mars 1884.
