Security deposit update (interest rates vary).

In our April/May issue Real Estate Column, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Residential Landlord and Tenancy Law, we mentioned that security deposits did reap interest from landlords. While this is true in a general way, it is rather more complicated than that. In fact, the interest rate to be paid on security deposits is set each January, and then varied every six months in years when interest rates are volatile. So if you live in one rental unit for five years, for example, your security deposit could reap five to ten different interest rates. The rates for the past decade are as follows:
