Long known as a tourism destination, Temagami is focusing on some other opportunities that can help grow the community.

The municipality, located on Highway 11, is about 100 kilometres north of North Bay.

"Our municipality is in good shape," said Mayor John Hodgson. "Our finances are in order, our municipal debt load is low, our municipal reserves are healthy, and our budget is balanced."

As happy as Hodgson is, he would like to see more jobs, and wants them to come from the mining industry.

The municipality was home to the former iron ore Sherman Mine which operated from 1967 to 1990.

"We have a geology that's rich here, and I'm asking the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines to complete or provide us with the funding to have geological compiliation and land tenure studies completed.

"We want to know who the players are, and have them re-access the mineral potential as a whole in the area," he said.

Hodgson wants Temagami to be known not just as a place to go canoeing, but reinforce the idea that there is still a lot of rich mining potential in the area.

Temagami has also completed a new economic strategy born out of a visioning exercise of where council and community can grow.
