Barrick recovered more than 80 per cent of gold from their ore, but only 6.7 per cent of silver. With silver trading at $13 an ounce the company is missing out on over $2 billion worth of precious metals. So much of the silver remains unprocessed that could potentially create an environmental issue for the company.

Barrick's own researchers and contracted geologists, metallurgists and scientists have come up empty handed in trying to find a cost effective way to extract the mineral.
