Edmonton, Alberta correctional centre staff will be equipped with Taser guns as part of a new zero tolerance policy toward violence, dangerous, or threatening behaviour in provincial jails. The move bolsters provisions of the Corrections Amendment Act, passed earlier this year, that took effect September 30. "We hope that they will be used infrequently, but correctional centres must ensure the safety of both staff and offenders," said Solicitor General Heather Forsyth. "This equipment is deemed a suitable response in situations where that safety is threatened."

Taser stun guns are limited-range weapons that deliver a mild electrical charge to briefly immobilize aggressive and violent offenders. The devices will be issued to specially trained response teams in adult correctional centres. The technology is currently used in provincial correctional facilities in British Columbia and Nova Scotia and by several police agencies across Canada.
