In 2007, the total violent, crime rate for Canada was 930 per 100,000 population, while Ontario's was 734. The rates of Northern Ontario's two largest census metropolitan areas (CMAs) were Thunder Bay at 1335 and Sudbury at 888. These rates were higher than Southern Ontario CMAs of London (730), Toronto (709), Kingston (689), Windsor (644), Ottawa (599), and Kitchener (565).

The total property crime rate of Northern Ontario's CMAs was Thunder Bay at 3942 and Sudbury at 2691. In comparison, London had 3867, Windsor (3321), Kingston (3001), Ottawa (2915), Kitchener (2721), and Toronto (2307). The national rate was 3320 while Ontario's was 2635.
