aBOUT THE AUTHOR
Nicholas Bala is a Professor at the Faculty of Law at Queen's University
and one of Canada's leading experts in the field of family law and chil-
dren's law. He has published extensively on such topics as legal issues
related to child witnesses and child abuse, young offenders, custody
and access following divorce, child support, the legal definition of the
family and leagl responses to family violence. His work is often cited
by the courts, including the Supreme Court of Canada. He has done
considerable consulting on law reform issues in the family law field for
federal and provincial governments as well as for aboriginal organiza-
tions, and has appeared as a witness at a number of Parliamentary hear-
ings. He is also the author of Young Offenders Law (1997) in Irwin
Law's Essentials of Canadian Law series.
