Foreword
Professor Bala’s Youth Criminal Justice Law will be an invaluable addi-
tion to the library of anyone working or studying in the youth justice
field. It is a timely publication, focusing on Canada’s new Youth
Criminal Justice Act, which replaces the Young Offenders Act. The new
legislation is more complex than its predecessor, and introduces new
principles and policies that will significantly alter practice and proce-
dure in Canada’s youth justice system. This book identifies and
explains the significant changes to the laws governing procedure, evi-
dence, and sentencing. Abundant references to recent court cases, rel-
evant articles — including many from related disciplines — and critical
commentary can be found in every chapter. As a result, it will be indis-
pensable to lawyers and judges, but also to probation officers, youth
workers, and other youth justice professionals.
A leading authority with an international reputation in children’s
law and youth justice, Professor Bala is the author of a number of
books and many articles in journals of law, sociology, psychology, and
medicine. All levels of court in Canada frequently cite his work. And
as his experience and expertise extend beyond law, he is able to explain
adolescent offending behaviour, children’s evidence, and other aspects
of the Youth Criminal Justice Act from a broader social and psychologi-
cal perspective.
Youth Criminal Justice Law, as a professional text, is exceptional.
Professor Bala draws on his skill as an award-winning educator and
effective communicator to translate complex legislation and difficult
issues into language that is easy to read and understand.
