ere comes a time in an author’s life when he (for those who don’t know
me, I am a male) should look back and acknowledge with gratitude t he con-
tribution that others h ave made to the development of one’s career. Since
Google tells me th at I have written more than  book s that it will, f ree of
charge, preserve for poster ity on the Internet, this is my ti me. First and fore-
most, I want to thank my l ate parents, Kathleen Ma ry Payne and Frederick
Payne. For the rest of this piece, I shal l avoid the word “late.” If the people I
mention continue to inuence what I do, then it is unfa ir to refer to them as
late. In any event, I am not always su re whether some of them are still on the
tree of life. Some people have the sa me thoughts about me. I derive my com-
mitment and dedication from my mother. W hen my mother was in business
with my father, she was the init iator of change. She had an uncanny abi lity to
anticipate changes in m arket forces. For those who have followed my career,
which probably means only me, I a lways took pride in being the rst o the
mark. It didn’t always work out. In the m id-s, I submitted an art icle en-
titled “e Medi ation of Family Disputes” to the Canadian Bar Review a nd to
the Irish Jurist. ey both decli ned to publish it because it had nothing to do
with law. How times have cha nged. Not to be defeated, I published the paper
