ere comes a time in an author’s life when he (for those who don’t know
me, I a m a male) should look back and acknowledge with gratitude the con-
tribution that others have m ade to the development of one’s ca reer. Since
Google tel ls me that I have writ ten more than  books that it will, free of
charge, preserve for poster ity on the Internet, this is my time. First and fore-
most, I wa nt to thank my late parents, Kath leen Mary Payne and Frederick
Payne. For the rest of this piece, I shall avoid the word late. If the people I
mention continue to inf‌luence what I do, then it is un fair to refer to them as
late. In any event, I am not alw ays sure whether they are still on t he tree of
life. Some people have the same thoughts about me. I derive my commitment
and dedication from my mother. When my mother was in business wit h my
father, she was t he initiator of change. She had an uncanny ability to antici-
pate changes in market forces. For those who have followed my career, which
probably means only me, I always took pride in being the f‌irst of‌f the mark. It
didn’t always work out. In the mid-s, I submitted an article entitled “e
Mediation of Fam ily Disputes” to the Canadian Bar Review and to t he Irish
Jurist. e y both declined to publish it. I suppose it had nothing to do with
law. How t imes have ch anged. Not to be defeated, I published the paper in
Payne’s Divorce and Family Law Digest at pages – ( Richard De Boo Pub-
lishers, ). My publishers had no choice if the y wanted to continue to use
my services as a digester of ca ses. But, looking back beyond that point to the
beginning of my writing a nd law reform careers, I owe it all to Tony Palmer,
