OBJECTIVES
Objectives
. e objectives of these Guidelines a re
(a) to establish a fair standard of support for children that ensures that they continue
to benefit from the financial means of bot h spouses after separation;
(b) to reduce conflict and tension bet ween spouses by making the calculation of child
support orders more objec tive;
(c) to improve the efficiency of the legal process by giving court s and spouses guidance
in setting the levels of ch ild support orders and encouraging sett lement; and
(d) to ensure consistent treatment of spouses and children who are in similar circum-
stances.

INTERPRETATION
Definitions
. () e definitions in this subsection apply in t hese Guidelines.
“Ac t ”
“Act” means the Divorce Act.
“child”
“child” means a chi ld of the marriage.
“income”
“income” means the an nual income determined under sections to .
“orde r ass igne e”
“order assignee” means a minist er, member or agency referred to in subsection .() of the Act
to whom a child support order is assigned i n accordance with that subsection.
“spouse”
“spouse” has the meaning a ssigned by subsection () of the Act, and includes a former spouse.
“table”
“table” means a federal chi ld support table set out in Schedule I.
universal c hild care benefit”
“universal child care benefit” means a benefit provided under section of the Universal Child
Care Benefit Act.
Income Tax Act
() Words and expressions that are used i n sections to and that are not defined in this
section have the meaning s assigned to them under the Income Tax Act.
Most current information
() Where, for the purposes of these Guidelines, a ny amount is determined on the basis of
specified information, t he most current information must be used.
Application of Gu idelines
() In addition to child support orders, these Guidelines apply, with such modifications as
the circum stances require, to
(a) interim orders under subsections .() and () of the Act;
(b) orders varying a child support order;
(c) orders referred to in subsection () of the Act; and
(d) reca lculations under paragraph .()(b) of the Act.
Recalculations
() For greater certainty, the provisions of these Guidelines that confer a discretionary
power on a court do not apply to recalculations under pa ragraph .()(b) of the Act by a prov-
incial ch ild support service.
