Summary:

V.L.P. was held to be in civil contempt for repeated failure to either attend school or to be punctual and attentive in school.

The Alberta Court of Queen's Bench imposed six months' probation, which, inter alia, required V.L.P. to attend school.

Students - Attendance - Offences and punishments - Truancy - V.L.P., who was almost 16 years old, was held to be in civil contempt for repeated failure to either attend school or to be punctual and attentive in school - V.L.P. was significantly behind the level that she should have been at for her age - She should have been into her high school studies - The school suggested that she functioned at a grade 7 level - She believed that she was at a grade 8 level and refused to do any work below the grade 8 level - V.L.P.'s two siblings also had substantial schooling problems - The Alberta Court of Queen's Bench imposed six months' probation (the maximum permitted by s. 12 of the provincial Young Offenders Act) - The probation order required V.L.P. to, inter alia, attend school.
