FOR E WOR D
It is a great pleasure to write this foreword to the fourth edition of my
colleague Kent Roach’s book, Criminal Law. There is no Canadian book
like it and all those studying crimin al law will be indebted to Professor
Roach for his very readable and careful analysis of Canadi an crim inal
law. This book will be an excellent companion for student s i n c rim-
inal law courses both in the law schools and criminology and cr iminal
justice departments. A s is demonstrated by its citation by the Supreme
Court and other courts, even judges and seasoned crimin al lawyers
will benef‌it from read ing the thoughtful v iews on the basic principles
of criminal law articulated in this book. In addition, it deals with many
new developments in criminal law, such as new provisions rel ating to
corporate liability and new terrorism offences including the f‌irst two
convictions under the Anti-Terrorism Act. The fourth edition offers a
new chapter that provides a helpful examination of selected cr iminal
offences, including homicide offences, sexual assault, property, and
terrorism offences. The fact th at Professor Roach has acted as counsel
in a number of important Charter and sentencing cases discussed in
the book provides an added dimension to thi s work. Thi s thoroughly
revised fourth edition, like the f‌irst, second, and third, is destined to
be widely u sed and pra ised. I look forward to many future editions of
this valuable book.
