PREFACE

To the Second Edition

I wish to express my appreciation to the Legal Research Institute of the

University of Manitoba and its director Dr. Bryan Schwartz for their

continuing financial support. They allowed me to benefit from the fine

work done by Jennifer Kubas, who acted as my research assistant for

this second edition.

Much of this edition was prepared when I was on research and

study leave at the Faculty of Law, University of Auckland. My thanks

to Dean Julie Maxton and the members of the faculty for their assis-
