Summary:

The accused was convicted of firearms offences and possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, and sentenced. He appealed his convictions and sentence. He applied pursuant to s. 684 of the Criminal Code for the appointment of counsel respecting the appeal. The application turned primarily on whether the accused's appeal rose to a level of complexity that required the assistance of counsel in order to fairly adjudicate his appeal.

The British Columbia Court of Appeal allowed the application.
