Summary:
The subsidiary of a large oil company was convicted of depositing a deleterious substance, namely, oil, in waters frequented by fish contrary to s. 33(2) of the Fisheries Act, R.S.C. 1970, c. F-14. The Northwest Territories Territorial Court fined the subsidiary $20,000.

Offences - Sentence - Fines and penalties - Deposit of deleterious substance into waters frequented by fish - The subsidiary of a large oil company was convicted of depositing oil into waters frequented by fish contrary to s. 33(2) of the Fisheries Act - A damaged 10 year old barge of the subsidiary overloaded with "slops" (an oil/water waste mixture) sank in bad weather, spilling 4,000 gallons in one day - The spill was foreseeable - The subsidiary acted promptly and with all its resources to clean up the spill - It established new procedures to dispose of future wastes - The Northwest Territories Territorial Court imposed a $20,000. fine.
