Registration
with
the
College
A. The Act
Registration with
the
College
is
usually
a
routine exercise
if the
applicant
meets
the
criteria
for
registration outlined
in the
Social
Work
and
Social Ser-
vice
Work
Act,
1998.l
Section 18(1)
of the Act
states that
the
registrar shall
issue
a
certificate
of
registration
for
social
work
if the
applicant
a)
applies
for it in
accordance with
the
regulations
and the
by-laws;
b)
produces
documentation satisfactory
to the
Registrar that shows that
the
applicant,
i) has
obtained
a
degree
in
social work
from
a
social work program
accredited
by the
Canadian Association
of
Schools
of
Social
Work,
a
degree
from
a
social work program
or an
equivalent pro-
gram approved
by a
body prescribed
by the
regulations
or a
degree
from
a
social work program
or an
equivalent program pre-
scribed
by the
regulations,
or
ii) has a
combination
of
academic
qualifications
and
practical
expe-
rience that
is
substantially equivalent
to the
qualifications required
for
such
a
degree,
as
prescribed
by the
regulations;
c) has
paid
the
fees
prescribed
by the
by-laws;
and
d)
meets
any
other requirements prescribed
by the
regulations
for
registra-
tion.2
It is
important
to
note that section
18(1)
does
not
apply
to
social service
workers, whose registration requirements
are set out in
section 18(2).
Registration
as a
social worker
or
social service worker
is
normally
a
straightforward
administrative procedure.
The
applicant simply
fills
out the
appropriate
form
and
pays
the
prescribed
fees,
following which
the
College
