ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Robert Sharpe was formerly a professor at the Faculty of Law, Univer-
sity of Toronto, where he wrote and taught in the are as of constitutional
law, remedies, civil procedure, and cri minal law. From 1990 to 1995 he
served as Dean of the Facult y. He has app eared a s counsel in a numbe r
of Charter cases in courts at all levels, including the Supreme Court of
Canada. From 1988 to 1990, he served as the Supreme Court’s Execu-
tive Legal Officer. Robert Sharpe was elected a Fellow of the Roya l Soci-
ety of Canada in 1991. He was appointed to the Ontario Court of Just ice
(General Division) in 1995 and was appointed to the Ontario Court of
Appeal in 1999.
Kent Roach is a professor of Law at the University of Toronto. He has
been the editor-in-chief of the Criminal Law Quarte rly since 1998 and
has written a nd lectured extensively on cr iminal just ice, constitution-
al law, and anti-terrorism law in both Canada and abroad. He is t he
author of Constitutional Remedies in Canada (1994), Due Process and
Victims’ Rights: The New Law and Politics of Criminal Justice in Canada
(1999), The Supreme Court on Trial: Judicial Activism or Democratic Dia-
logue (20 01), September 11: Consequences for Canada (20 03), Criminal
Law, third edition (2003), and (with Robert J. Sharpe) Brian Dickson:
A Judge’s Journey (2003). Professor Roach has appeared a s counsel for
Aboriginal L egal Service s of Toronto and the Canadian Civil Liber ties
Association in cases in the Supreme Court of Can ada including Still-
man, Williams, Gladue, and Latimer. He also acted as counsel for the
Association in Aid of t he Wrongfully Convicted in the systemic issues
phase of the Kaufm an inquiry into the wrongful convict ion of Guy Paul
Morin and is presently ser ving as a member of t he research advisory
committee to both the Arar a nd Ipperwash inquir ies.
