ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Robert Sharpe was formerly a professor at the Faculty of Law, Univer-
sity of Toronto, where he wrote and taught in the areas of constitutional
law, remedies, civil procedure, and crim inal law. From 1990 to 1995 he
served as De an of the Faculty. He has appeared as counsel in a number
of Charte r cases in courts at all levels, including the Supreme Court of
Canada. From 1988 to 1990, he ser ved as the Supreme Court’s Executive
Legal Off‌icer. Robert Sharpe was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of
Canada in 1991. He was appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice (Gen-
eral Division) in 1995 and was appointed to the Ontario Court of Appeal
in 199 9. He was elect ed a Fellow o f the Roya l Society of Canad a in 1991,
awarded the Ontario Bar Association Distinguished Service Award in
2005, elected a Senior Fellow of Mas sey College in 2006, and received
the Mundell Medal for D istinguished Contribution to Law and Letters
in 2008. Justice Sharpe has published many scholarly articles and is the
author of several award-winning book s on law and legal history.
Kent Roach is a Professor of Law at the University of Toronto. He for-
merly served as Law Clerk to M adam Justice Bertha Wilson of the Su-
preme Court of Canada. He has been the editor-in-chief of the Criminal
Law Quarterly since 1998 and has written extensively on constitutional
law, crim inal justice, and anti-terrorism law in both Canada and abroad,
including a chapter on the crimin al process in the Oxford Handbook of
Legal Studies (2003). He is the author of Constitutional Remedies in Can-
ada (1994), which was awarded the 1997 Walter Owen Book Prize as
the best legal text in Canada, and (with Robert J. Sharpe) of Brian Dick-
son: A Judge’s Journey (2003), which was awarded t he 2004 Defoe Prize
for best contribution to the underst anding of Canad a. Other books in-
