Acknowledgments
It is a pleasure to thank the many people who have contributed to this book.
My friend and colleague Stuart Adam deserves a great deal of credit
for the structure of the book. It is based on one we developed over sever-
al years of collaboration and is found in our joint work, A Sourcebook of
Canadian Media Law, 2d ed. (Ottawa: Carleton University Press, 1994).
I also want to thank the law students who have been my research
assistants over the years. Prominent among them are Shelley Appleby-
Ostroff, Elaine Crossland, Maureen Dennison, Eve Donner, Karen Dou-
glas, Nathan Golas, Kathryn Hazel, James Newland, Lynda Rogers,
Michael Rumball, Federico Soda, and Helen Song. Particular thanks,
although there are far too many of them to name, go to the working
journalists to whom I have tried to teach Media Law and from whom I
have learned so much about the way the media actually work.
Special gratitude goes to my colleague Margaret Ann Wilkinson,
who read the entire manuscript and saved me from many errors, and to
Rosemary Shipton, for her fine editing of the book. Barbara Martin and
Alan Swann prepared the figures, which are entirely the product of
their skill and creativity. Barbara Martin also helped prepare the index.
Finally, I have had the pleasure of working with Kathleen Adair for
twenty-one years. Once again I thank her for her ability, hard work,
kindness, and good cheer.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS FOR THE SECOND EDITION
Very special thanks must go to Frances Lethbridge. I don’t think that it
would be possible for me to write anything without her assistance. My
approach to preparing a second edition to this book was to add a great
many handwritten interpolations and elaborations to the existing man-
uscript. If the result is even coherent, it is largely her doing.
