Foreword

To the First Edition

Robert Martin has written a delightful, valuable book. I recommend to

every lawyer and journalist that they read the entire book as quickly as

they can. He has created a seamless logical view of all the issues which

confront a reporter or a lawyer. The book is cohesive and persuasive. If

one follows the book one will have a lexicon of conduct, a touchstone.

He is opinionated but he stresses the responsibility of the journalist to

get it right before publishing.

I was excited when I finished the book. I have been a courtroom

lawyer dealing with libel for more than thirty years and this text creat-

ed a whole new vista on several important areas of the law. Professor

Martin is a persuasive teacher and I found myself to be a beguiled stu-

dent. I trust the reader will also.
