Conclusion
tHE MajOr tHEME of this book is a variety of the golden
rule: think of others as you prepare to act and as you
act, then treat them with respect and accommodate their
needs, as much as is practical.
is sounds simple. It is not. We are caught up in our
own busy world and we get frustrated by obstacles that
arise often throughout the day. ese obstacles may have
nothing to do with the case you now face, and they may
have been caused unintentionally by your client, your
witness, your opposing counsel, or the trial judge. ey
cannot always accommodate you and your needs, either.
e standard to which you should aspire is that of
professional behaviour. When in doubt, ask yourself
these questions:
Who is my audience?
How does my audience perceive me?
What would a genuine professional do in these cir-
cumstances?
If you prepare thoroughly, if you do your best to con-
sider and accommodate the needs of others, if you keep a
