FOR E WOR D
It is a great pleasure to wr ite this foreword to the eighth edition of
my colleague Kent Roach’s book, Criminal Law. There is no Canadian
book like it and all those study ing crimina l law will be indebted to
Professor Roach for his very readable and careful analysi s of Canadian
criminal law. This book will be an excellent companion for students
in crimin al law courses, both in the l aw schools and criminology and
crimina l justice departments. As i s demonstrated by its citation by the
Supreme Court and other courts, even judges and seasoned criminal
lawyers wi ll benef‌it from reading the thoughtf ul views on the basic
principles of crimin al law articulated in this book. In addition, it deals
with many new developments in criminal law, such as new develop-
ments relating to sexual assault oences and the provocation defence,
as well as infa nticide. The fact that Professor Roach has acted as counsel
in a number of important Charte r and sentencing cases d iscussed in
the book provides an added dimension to this work. This thoroughly
revised eighth ed ition, like the earlier editions, is de stined to be widely
used and praised. I look forwa rd to future editions of this valuable book.
