Preface
One of the
time-honoured traditions
of the Law
Society
of
Upper Canada
is
the
Special Lectures Series. Held
annually,
the
Lectures bring together
legal
experts
of
national
and
international prominence
to
share their
ideas
and
perspectives
on a
particular area
of law
with
the
membership.
The
Special Lectures Series grew
out of an
initiative that began
in
1943,
which
was
designed
to
provide
legal refresher
courses
for
members
of
the
profession
who
were returning
from
military service
in
World
War
II.
Although
the
refresher courses were discontinued
in
1946, their
usefulness
could
not be
denied.
In
1950
the
newly created Committee
on the
Continuing Education
of
the Bar
revisited
the
original concept.
As a
result,
a
lecture series
was
developed
for
practising lawyers, which dealt with
a
wide range
of
topics.
This informative lecture series gradually developed into
the
highly successful
and
diverse Continuing Legal Education Program
now
undertaken
by the Law
Society
of
Upper Canada.
As
the
flagship program
of the
Society,
the
Special Lectures Series
is
well known
for its
exceptional quality,
the
high
calibre
of its
speakers,
and its
usefulness
for
those
who
attend.
This year's series
was
dedicated
to
family
law,
an
area
that
has
changed
dramatically
in the
last
few
years.
It was one of the
best-attended Special
Lectures
Series ever
held,
no
doubt
a
result
of its
outstanding lineup
of
speakers
and its
relevance
to
today's lawyers.
On
behalf
of the Law
Society
of
Upper Canada,
I
would like
to
thank
chair
Philip
M.
Epstein, Q.C.,
LSM and the
distinguished members
of
the
bench
and bar who
developed
and
presented this year's exceptional
program.
The
publication that
follows
will undoubtedly
be of
great
use
to the
members
of the
legal profession.
