Regulating Titles
Given the vast complexity of the Canadian capital markets and the
risks that come with any nancial product, it should come as no
surprise that most Canadian retail investors go to nancial advisers
or nancial planners for help with their investments. A recent sur-
vey found that 79 percent of Canadian investors use advisers to help
them make some or most of their nancial decisions. The 2017 CSA
Investor Index Report found that nancial advisers are the most
common source of investing information for Canadians. Investors
look to these professionals for their expertise in the capital markets,
engaging their services in the hopes of maximizing the value of
an investment. While this may appear to be a straightforward busi-
ness relationship, the relevant regulation and poor communication
between clients and intermediaries can undermine investors’ abil-
ity to access reliable nancial advice.
