ere comes a time in an author’s life when he (for those who don’t know
me, I am a male) should look back and ac knowledge with grat itude the con-
tribution that others have m ade to the development of one’s career. Since
Google tells me th at I have written more th an  books that it wi ll, free of
charge, preserve for poster ity on the Internet, this is my ti me. First and fore-
most, I want to thank my l ate parents, Kathleen M ary Payne and Freder ick
Payne. For the rest of this piece, I sha ll avoid the word late. If the people I
mention continue to inuence what I do, then it is unf air to refer to them as
late. In any event, I am not always s ure whether they are sti ll on the tree of
life. Some people have the s ame thoughts about me. I derive my commitme nt
and dedication from my mother. When my mother was in business with my
father, she was the initiator of ch ange. She had an uncan ny ability to antic i-
pate changes in market forces. For those who have fol lowed my career, which
probably means only me, I alw ays took pride in being the rst o the m ark. It
didn’t always work out. In the mid-s, I subm itted an article entitled “ e
Mediation of Family Di sputes” to the Canadia n Bar Review and to the Irish
Jurist. ey both dec lined to publish it. I suppose it had noth ing to do with
law. How times have changed . Not to be defeated, I published the paper i n
Payne’s Divorce and Family Law Digest at pages – (Rich ard De Boo Pub-
lishers, ). My publishers had no choice if they w anted to continue to use
my services as a d igester of cases. But, looking back beyond that point to the
beginning of my w riting and law reform careers, I owe it al l to Tony Palmer,
